When I try to sign on to iChat it wont let me.?

I'm Using a Macbook but even when I try and use a differnt comp my SN wont sign in. My buddy list comes up but its empty. I select new chat pick an sn and when i try and say something it says my privacy settings wont let me communicate with that person. Anyone out there know how to fix this?
